Safety — read this one

Welding and cutting involve electricity, extreme heat, ultraviolet radiation, compressed gases and airborne metal fume. Done carelessly they cause burns, eye injuries, fires, respiratory harm and electric shock.

Everything on this site is general guidance for home welding. It does not replace your machine's own manual, your consumable manufacturer's safety data sheet, or the applicable OSHA, AWS and ANSI standards. Where any of those differ from anything written here, they govern and this site does not.

Electrical work is for a licensed electrician. Our pages about circuits, breakers and supply voltage exist to help you have an informed conversation with one. They are not instructions for doing the work yourself, and circuit installation must comply with the National Electrical Code and your local jurisdiction's requirements.

Structural and towing work may carry legal requirements about who may carry it out and how it must be inspected. Those requirements exist because of what happens when such welds fail. Check your local rules before welding anything that carries a load, holds a person off the ground, or attaches to a towing system.

You are responsible for your own safety, for the safety of anyone else in your workspace, and for the suitability of any weld you make for its intended purpose.

Accuracy

We make a genuine effort to be accurate. Every technical figure is attributed to a manufacturer's documentation or a named standards body, and How We Pick sets out the method in full.

Specifications change, products are discontinued, and errors happen. This site is provided as is, without warranty that every figure is current or correct. If you find something wrong, tell us and we will check it against the source.

Always verify critical specifications — particularly electrical requirements and material capacities — against the manufacturer's own documentation for the specific machine you are buying or using.

Recommendations

Product recommendations on this site are editorial opinion based on published specifications, arithmetic and the pattern of owner feedback. We have not physically tested these products and we say so on every page.

A recommendation is not a guarantee of suitability for your particular project. You are responsible for confirming that a machine suits your material, your power supply and your intended use.
