Why this site exists
Buying a first welder is unnecessarily confusing. The guides that come up first are written for someone comparing duty cycles across seventeen machines — not for someone who has never struck an arc and wants to know which machine will run off their garage outlet.
Arc & Bead sorts gear by the level you are actually at. Level 1 is a flux-core machine and a standard wall socket. Level 4 is a plasma cutter and a 240-volt circuit. Every recommendation on this site says which level it is for, and why.
Who writes it
Ryder M.
Arc & Bead is written by Ryder M., the hands-on owner behind Magoo Media Group. He writes the buying guides and picks every machine on the site.
He started this site because of the gap described above: the welding content that ranks is written for spec researchers, and almost none of it is written for someone at the beginning.
Ryder does not claim to have bench-tested every machine on this site, and Arc & Bead does not pretend otherwise. What each pick is based on is set out in full on How We Pick.
What we do not claim
This deserves its own heading, because a lot of sites in this category blur it.
We have not physically tested these machines. There is no test lab, no workshop full of loaned welders, and no team of testers. Where you see the word "tested" on other welding sites, it frequently means the same thing — but we would rather say so than imply otherwise.
We do not publish scores or star ratings. A numeric score implies a measurement. We have not measured these machines, so we give a verdict and the reasoning behind it instead, and you can judge whether the reasoning holds.
We do not publish prices. There is no live price feed for this site, so any figure we printed would be a snapshot we could not keep current. A stale price misleads in a way a reader cannot detect, so every buy button links to the retailer's current price instead.
There are no testimonials on this site, because there are no real ones to publish. We will not invent them.
What we do instead
Published manufacturer specifications, read carefully and quoted with their source. Duty cycle and amperage arithmetic worked against what each level actually builds. The pattern of owner feedback across retailers, described as a pattern rather than as our own experience. And every technical figure attributed to a named source — a manufacturer's documentation, the American Welding Society, OSHA, ANSI or the National Electrical Code.
Being the only site in this niche that states its method plainly is a differentiator rather than an apology, and we write it in that register.

It does not change which machine we recommend. On several pages the honest recommendation is the cheapest machine on the page, and on at least one the honest recommendation is an angle grinder instead of the product the page is about.
